Rolling back the years: Mattel's New WWE Retro line brings nostalgic memories back for fans4/7/2017 In the year 1990 WWE (then WWF) was in dizzying heights of popularity as superstars such as Hulk Hogan, Macho Man Randy Savage and the Ultimate Warrior packed out arenas and drew in bumper TV audiences. As with most things to enable fans to emulate the heroes and villains of the ring an action figure line was produced. LJN had previously owned the license but Hasbro picked it up - the rest as they say is history - for the next 4 years the line became a must have with fans of all ages. Cut forward 23 years to now and the line is still collected by many and considered to be one of the best of all time. The license for WWE is now owned by Mattel - and after much wishing and wanting it seems the fans have finally got what they want with a whole new line of 'Retro Figures' in a clear nod to the Hasbro era of old. Mattel have already done a fantastic job of bringing back superstars of yesteryear with their 'Legends' and 'Elite' Lines but it's these new Retro figures which are sure to bring back memories for those old enough to remember the style first time round - and which are likely to be a hit with the new generation of fans too. At present Series One is starting to appear in stores with a line up of - Ultimate Warrior The Undertaker John Cena Brock Lesnar Kevin Owens Roman Reigns Initially in the US only rumours of sightings in the UK are now popping up. Below are photos of a selection of the above - Needless to say Mattel have done a great job of recreating the classic feel and with Stone Cold Steve Austin, Kane and The Rock being touted for Series Two you have to imagine that fans of the line will be drawing up a wish list of classic stars they'd love to see made into this retro style.

Forbidden Planet have a Breaking Bad action figure from Mezco on sale at a bargain price at the moment - the figure in question.... Jesse Pinkman in his Yellow Hazmat Suit Bearing in mind these figures have been on sale for as high as £16.99 as of time of writing you can grab this figure for just £4.99!! These are selling on eBay at the £16.99 price so definitely grab one before they sell out!! Click below to follow the link to purchase the figure..... Many years ago - way before this site was published I used to run a site named www.prototypecollector.com. It was set around my collecting habits of picking up unusual pre-production figures from toy lines of the late 80's/early 90's however truth be told it never really took off and other sites I had were more popular so time was spent focusing and working on them and as a result the prototypecollector slipped away - however during its run it did give me the chance to showcase some of the more unusual pick ups I owned. Such is the world of collecting that items come, and items go - and, in the particular case of this post, items went - and I have regretted selling them ever since. The Prototypes in question came from Kenner Action Figures line of Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure. Bill & Ted for those that don't know are two 'dudes' (watch the movie - you'll get it) who have dreams of being Rock and Roll stars with their band Wyld Stallyns - however school is getting in the way of their dreams - made worse by the fact they are about to fail if they don't pass their upcoming history class. The catch is they need to pass the exam to stay together and a guy from the future (Rufus) turns up to help them pass. As they travel through time they pick up some historical characters..... and the rest as they say - is history! Interestingly the action figure line from Kenner was released to coincide with the Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey movie of 1991 and the line featured Bill S Preston Esq, Ted 'Theodore' Logan and a host of their friends from the movies. So it was a few years ago that I picked up 4 testshot prototypes of these figures along with some concept art work. The pictures of the figures I acquired are below. As mentioned I actually ended up selling these and have regretted it ever since - these days I am sure they sit in a private collection and are being well looked after however the Art Work remains with me to this day.
Anyway - there is my 'blast from the past' for you. The toy line once it reached the shelves wasn't a hit - but I think the line was actually pretty cool! I'm tempted to go hunting for the released pieces now! If I end up buying any watch this space! PARTY ON DUDES. Last week I posted about one of my latest WWF Hasbro additions - a Bart Gunn 2-up head. That item alone is super rare however tonight I'm posting about a duo of pick ups that exceed that rarity.
The items in question - The Undertaker Unreleased Orange Cards 2-up heads. Before we go into detail on these items I think it's well worth looking at the back story that surrounds this illusive part of the Hasbro line. It's long been reported that before the WWF Hasbro line ended a Orange card series was in the works - and up until recently this was an unconfirmed rumour. Names including everyone from Diesel to Mabel were banded around but it wasn't until wax sculpts from a former employee were unearthed that the full line up was realised. One of those wax sculpts uncovered was that of the Undertaker. The Undertaker had already featured in the line in previous series however the planned figure was a new sculpt. Now - It's been mentioned before that I have - since my days of running thewrestlingcollector.com - made numerous contracts in the figure market and on the same day I purchased the Bart Gunn 2-up I also got these painted and unpainted 2-up Orange Card Undertaker Heads. Those who collect Hasbro WWF figures will realise the importance of these items - for those who don't - the best way to explain them is a Hasbro collectors dream - considered non existent / lost for so long having these is a missing piece of the Hasbro puzzle. Plans are afoot to have them graded and cased. 2014 has been an epic year for collectors of the line and these will form part of the history behind the line Those who know me and equally those who are regular visitors to this site will know one of my long standing collecting passions is for the classic early 90's Hasbro WWF action figure line. My fondness for wrestling figures actually lead to me running www.thewrestlingcollector.com up until earlier this year (plans are in progress to rebuild the site again). It was during the time running this site I was put in touch with those who had worked on this classic line - and in turn who owned some pre-production items previously never seen. Chatting to these 'legends of the line' led to me being able to make offers and in turn obtain some classic pieces including various test shots, the yellow masked Ultimate Warrior prototype and The Warlord 2up to name but a few. Recently from a contact I made during this time I have been able to add more preproduction items to my collection and tonight I thought I would share one of them with you ....... I'm proud to present the Smoking Gunns Bart Gunn 2-up head. A 2-up is a figure that stands twice the size of the regular released item and is made during pre-production. Sadly the body of this figure no longer exists but just owning the head is like owning a piece of figure history! This item is hand painted and despite being 20 years old in fine condition! The Smoking Gunns were part of the final released Hasbro series that came out on green cards. In terms of the released figures they were the most difficult to obtain and demand high prices in the market today. As you will see from the photos this item is an amazing piece and one that will take a prime seat in my collection. 2-ups are nearly impossible to get hold of from this line so I'm delighted to own this. There's more to come from this latest haul so watch this space. Enjoy! |
